Feeling less connected predicts more chatbot use - and more use predicts more isolation later

What they found

Feeling less connected than usual predicted more chatbot use for company or advice four months later. More use predicted feeling more emotionally isolated four months on, but not feeling less connected.

How they know

2,149 adults in the UK, US, Canada and Australia answered up to four surveys, four months apart. Each person was compared with their own usual level.

What it means for you

In this data, turning to a chatbot more often did not ease isolation later. When you feel cut off, reach out to a person too.

The limits

Observational and self-reported, so no proof of cause. Isolation was one question. Small links, no preregistration - the authors call them exploratory. Most never used chatbots this way; about 1% did daily. Online panel; under half finished all four surveys.
