Experiences feel stronger when they are shared
What they found
The same experience felt more intense when another person was experiencing it at the same time - even with no words exchanged. Pleasant chocolate tasted better; unpleasant chocolate tasted worse.
How they know
Participants tasted chocolate either while another person tasted the same chocolate or while that person did something unrelated; intensity rose only under shared experience, in both directions.
What it means for you
The same coffee, the same walk, the same idea registers more strongly with someone beside you. Presence is an amplifier.
The limits
Small lab studies of college students; follow-up work found no amplification with strangers or from another room - it takes some closeness and the same space; and sharing amplifies the bad as well as the good.
This is a short takeaway in our own words, not a reproduction of the study. For the method, the sample and the caveats, read the original. Mind lives inside the Booking Minds app under the brain icon, where you can save and share each piece.
