Talking to strangers makes people happier than they expect
Commuters were asked to strike up a conversation with a stranger on the train. Almost everyone predicted it would be awkward and unpleasant. It was the opposite: those who talked reported a markedly better ride than those who sat in silence, and the strangers enjoyed it too. Our fear of reaching out is mostly a forecasting error.
